I'm a firm believer in there being beauty in any city. I'd like to see pics of all the different cities and countries people live in.

I'll go first. I'm from beautiful Erie, Pa. I live on the shore of Lake Erie, one of the US's Great Lakes. The crowning jewel is Presque Isle State Park, or just the Peninsula as us locals call it.

This is from the peninsula looking over the bay to the dock. Kinda fuzzy but you get the point.

This is the Bicentennial Tower. Rumor says that if you go up to the very top and look north you can see Canada. You can't, but its still a very breathtaking view,

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e362/zeldaop/Peninsula/PICT0004-1.jpg

This is Perry Square. A park that spans both east and west sides of the main street, right in the heart of downtown Erie. You can't see any right now, but on really hot days children will play in the fountains water.

Just another random park shot.

Got some more pics to show you. This is Waldameer, our very own amusement park. It's over a hundred years old and manages to combine both the older rides with more modern ones. Waldameer is unique in that there is free parking and free admission to the park. On with the tour.

This clown has been around forever and I still have pics from when I was a kid many many years ago.

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e362/zeldaop/Waldameer/PICT0004.jpg

This sign is newer, but still cool looking.

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e362/zeldaop/Waldameer/PICT0005.jpg

These kiddie rides are old and I can remember riding them on family trips to the park. I always loved the horsey one.

this is the Whacky Shack. It's an old-school ride through haunted house. My friend Jen and I went on it once and our car got stuck in there. Can't really say I've been on it since. LOL.

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e362/zeldaop/Waldameer/PICT0012.jpg

They've also added newer, more modern rides too.

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e362/zeldaop/Waldameer/PICT0006.jpg

This one was just added this year.

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e362/zeldaop/Waldameer/PICT0010-1.jpg

I don't care for the newer rides as I don't like rollercoasters or heights. My favorites are the ones that spin you around.

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e362/zeldaop/Waldameer/PICT0008.jpg

To finish it off, there's also a waterpark.

Wow Z, the Park near my house was built in 1906 or so, and it had almost all of the same older rides yours did. Sadly a younger guy bought it and has gotten rid of most of them. It used to be free admittance and then youd buy tickets per ride. Now its one large admission price. I really would LOVE to visit that park. It reminds me so much of my childhood.

Weatherford, Texas
Cutting Horse Capital of the World
Peach Capital of Texas

Mkay... welcome to Weatherford, Texas. We were founded in the 1850's and we have an annual Peach Festival held on the square in the center of town. Two of the men in Lonesome Dove lived here and are both buried in Greenwood Cemetery. Charles Goodnight of the Goodnight Loving Trail is buried here and this is also the town that the Chuck Wagon was rumored to have been invented in. We have a courthouse on the center of the square that was built in 1864 after a tax evader burned the former one just three years earlier.
Mary Martin, famous Broadway actress and noted for her performances in Peter Pan was born and raised here as was her son Larry Hagman and his infamous brother.
Douglas Chandor, famous artist, lived in Weatherford and established his Chandor Botanical Gardens. His portraits included those of Queen Elizabeth II, Winston Churchill, and U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Gerbera, you have such a beautiful town, I love the history in the buildings <3

gerbera
07-24-2007, 05:15 AM
Yeah, history is the right word
In 2005 the city celebrated its 1200th anniversary. Well, it was first mentioned in a document in 805, but historians think that already existed in the fifth or sixth century.
Unfortunately almost all old buildings were destryed in the 30-years-war (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sack_of_Magdeburg) of the 17th century, and then again more then 80 % of the city was destroyed in January 1945 in a bombing :(
I am glad that the city government manage to safe and renovate some of the buildings.
But believe, there are buildings where nothing has changed since 1945, they are still ruins. The city doesn't have too much money ^^

This building was originally built by the Knights of Pythias. A load of old children's stories involve the knight on this building coming to life after he's been struck by lightning.

The small object you see on the railing on the second floor is an owl statue. It's been there for as long as I can remember.

The Shops of the Square...

Window shopping is a really good habit to get into here. During the big holidays here like Peach Festival or Christmas on the Square, the sidewalks will be crowded with visitors, noses pressed against the windows to view the nostalgia within...

Historic Houses...

Okay, these pictures are a lot older than some of the others I posted, even the one that has the car mirror. Example, the Italianate Victorian on the corner of Spring and Brazos hasnt had that fence for a good many a year. Still, I hope you like em.

The following are of the St. Botolph Inn, located on Lamar Avenue. Built in 1897, it overlooks most of the historic district.
William E. Tate, a Tennesseean, built the house in 1897. The initial plans called for an eleven room, single story house for approximately $4,500. But somewhere along the line that changed to a two story, 15 room, 5,500+square foot Queen Anne style Victorian mansion with a large ballroom on the second floor. Mr. Tate was a hardware merchant whose store, built in 1895, still remains in service today. The mansion sits on a hilltop and Mr. Tate owned 70 to 80 acres of the surrounding land, which was used for grazing and farming, even though it is approximately eight blocks from the courthouse.
