By next summer,
I am going to be able to say "When in Rome..." in the center of the ancient world. That's right, I'm going to Italy.
We land in Milan and proceed through the Boot.
When in Verona, I shall see the statue of Juliet in her balcony, her silent eyes gazing skyward.
When in Florence, I will see Il Duomo, an architectural masterpiece of the Renaissance, and David, Michaelangelo's artistic masterpiece of the Renaissance.
When in Venice, I will take gondolas through the canals and past piazzas.
When in Sienna, I will waltz through the cobblestone streets and rustic fields of Tuscany.
When in Rome...
I will see St. Peter's Basilica, and the Last Judgement mural on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. I will be in the rooms that the most powerful men in the world have been elected.
I will see Piazza Navona, the Spanish Steps, the Colisseum.
I will see the sights that previously, have only been in books to me.
The streets where the bloody slain corpses of Roman soldiers withered away under the hot Meditteranean sun.
Whre the men of Da Vinci, Michaelangelo, Nicolo Machiavelli, the Medici's lived and died.
I'm going.
