Memorial Day. In the states it serves as the unofficial start of summer. A time for picnics and family get-togethers. Memorial Day, however, is much more than that.
Originally called Decoration Day, Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who have died in military service to our country.
In 1971, Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday to be celebrated on the last Monday of May.
So for anyone out there who has served in the military, lost someone in the military, or has someone they love in the military, I thank you. Without the sacrifices you and countless others have made, my life, my country, would be very different.
